Hatemail, more deeply

So, like Trevor said, Bil will explain Hatemail in greater detail. So here it is.

This is not only an experiment in social issues, it’s an experiment in art and media. We’re eager to see what kind of letters we receive, and the ones that move us the most (for happier or sadder) will be recorded by local actors and, ideally, underscored by local musicians.

Now, the art of writing letters may be going the way of the Yangtze River Dolphin (which is officially extinct, by the way, rat bastard polluters!), but we hope to revitalize it at least a little bit. Of course, the handwriting will be replaced with typed font, and the proper names of all people and places will be replaced with more anonymous fare, but the idea is that hopefully people will send us well-written letters with paragraphs and punctuation and all the rest, and that there will be a driving point throughout, and perhaps even a narrative to pull out of it.

Now, if the art of writing letters is to be brought back to life (Frankenstein-style) by spewing hate, ideally it will be sent to us and not to actual people. That’s very important. Don’t use our site to practice, and then go and write something even meaner and nastier and actually SEND it to someone else.

No.

GET IT ALL OUT AT ONCE, and send the letter to us. We repeat: do not send it to the actual subject of the letter…or, really, anyone else at all.

As I mentioned, while we hope this is good for other people and we hope that the bottled up rage of the world will find a safe outlet with us, we can’t honestly claim that this is entirely philanthropic. We want to play with it.

We are hoping to find new and interesting things to do with recordings. We want local actors to give dramatic readings, we want local composers to create original works to underscore these readings, and we want to create a convenient way for the up-and-coming of our local arts community to be able to show off their talent. (We’ve got voice actors and musicians down…we’re still trying to think of ways to include other art forms.)

So give us a shot. There are no consequences. We take great pains to keep everything anonymous, including changing names, places, and even dates if we have to. It can be as short or as long as you like. Give it a try, it’ll be fun, I swear. Probably therapeutic as well. Possibly even life-changing.

Thanks in advance for sending us your hate!

What an interesting concept! I don’t think I can summon up that much hate, but I’ll see what I can round up…

Hey guys, maybe I am misinterpreting, but where do I see what other people have written for the hatemail thing? Or is this something that only you all see? Just curious. :)

Love this concept! It really makes the work day go smoother sometimes-being able to vent that is.

I’ll be updating the site to include the letters that others have sent — I just wanted to wait until there were enough to do so!
