To Write Love On Her Arms

Love on my arm

I wrote “LOVE” on my arm today to show support for those battling depression, self-mutliation, destructive addictions, or contemplating suicide. There is an organization called To Write Love on Her Arms and today was their official annual day where you do this.

I wish I could say I was more involved, but honestly, I didn’t even know about this until I got an event invitation on Facebook. And I didn’t really get to show off my new temporary tattoo at work, because it was cold as hell in my office and I kept my sweater on half the day. But I did think about a few people that I don’t get to interact with on a regular basis, and I shot off a few e-mails just to say “hey,” and that’s better than nothing at all. I don’t have anything profound to say, and I can’t in good conscience preach to anyone, so I’ll just give out a handy reminder (that I myself need as often as anyone else I know): a friendly voice makes a difference.

Also: every now and then raise a glass to those you’ve lost to suicide and remember them fondly.

Also also: In a beautiful surprise, Wikipedia said this in their article about the organization:

As of April 2008, Hot Topic started carrying TWLOHA shirts, which makes Hot Topic the first chain to ever carry TWLOHA merchandise.

In my high school experience, Hot Topic was always a) six months behind every trend ever conceived, and b) the chosen attire of those whom To Write Love on Her Arms seeks to help. Good for you, Hot Topic!

That’s all.
